Mara Sopa Lodge | mara

Located high on the slopes of the Oloolaimutia Hills, Masai Mara Sopa Lodge was one of the first safari lodges to be built in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, a reason why its gardens and trees are so lush and mature. All the buildings follow the design of traditional African round houses with conical roofs, and these stretch along the line of the hills with the impressively large public area buildings and the swimming pool at their centre.

The lodge has fifty guest cottages divided into two wings to either side of the main public areas. Each of these house two spacious guest rooms with queen and king size beds; mosquito nets; electronic safes; dressing tables; en-suite bathrooms and sheltered verandas that all have views over the gardens and the game reserve beyond.

Six of the cottages each contain two suites with larger bedrooms and bathrooms, and both indoor and outdoor seating areas. In addition to all of the above, the honeymoon suite has an extremely large, luxuriously appointed bedroom with a king size bed; dressing table and indoor seating area. Its lavishly appointed bathroom contains both a shower and a sunken bath; and its sheltered veranda offers some of the most magnificent views available over the African landscapes below.

Set in the heart of the Aberdare National Park, famous and yes, eccentric, The Ark overlooks a floodlit waterhole and salt lick, which draws in a large group of wildlife. The Aberdare Country Club is settled on a slope of Mweiga Hill in the Aberdare Highlands, part of the Great Rift Valley. This captivating site was selected, with much feeling, by an English couple who had chosen to settle in the place that is known for their choosing – Kenya. Everything happened many years back: their children grew up there, however then proceeded onward to better places. After almost half a century, their home, "The Steep", was sold and developed along the lines the first owners would not have longed for, but rather was precisely supported and kept in a way they would have affirmed. This is highlighted in Monty Brown`s book, "Safe house under the Hill" so appropriately: "Today, in spite of the quick changing beat of the outside world, the old home still holds that comfortable, strong feeling on traditions from a period when life continued at a much more relaxed and tender pace". The Club`s 1,300 acre wildlife sanctuary is teeming with zebras, impalas,giraffes and the more reclusive leopards. It is a haven of unhurried charm set in a garden bursting with a bounty of shading, and with peacocks living inside the lavish green yards. Strolling through this untainted landscape is paradise. The Outspan Hotel | aberdares

Situated at the heart of Kenya`s coffee and Tea growing highlands and close to the spectacular Karuru Falls is a perfect getaway for any fun loving person. It has incredible atmosphere, dynamic gardens and verdant green gardens where peacocks wander freely.

In 1926 Major Eric Sherbrooke Walker and his better half Lady Bettie picked the ideal spot between the Aberdare Mountains and Mount Kenya to build their dream Hotel in Nyeri. After purchasing the land from the government, they build another four rooms with private showers and running water.

The Walkers offered a bottle of champagne to whoever recommended the best name for the new hotel. It went to Grace Barry, a saw-mill operator who proposed `Outspan` meaning where the explorer outspans(un-harnesses) his weary bulls toward the end of the day`s journey. Outspan was officially opened to people in general on New Year`s Day 1928 with ten rooms.

Master Baden-Powell, the Scouts Movement author, and a companion of Walker spent the most recent years of his life at the Paxtu Cottage inside the Outspan compound.

Samburu Sopa lodge is built atop high ground allowing panaromic views of the vastness of Samburu shrub land and the hills beyond. The lodge is built to reflect the architectural heritage of the local communities whose sons and daughters make up the majority of the work force at the lodge.

The cottages are built in an arch formation on either side of the public areas to surround the waterhole but leaving a wide gap to allow the animals free movement to the water. Also follow the exterior design of centuries-old, traditional Samburu housing, but the similarity stops there. Instead, the structures have much higher ceilings; far larger windows; much more floor space and en suite bathrooms.

Agama Mara was designed by Kenya`s King of Canvas with elegant and classical tented suites with an 11-metre wide floor-to-ceiling glass front. Each tent has the same breathtaking view – no one is better than the last – and every day, the sunrise provides guests with early morning theatre as the hot air balloons float gently by.

The location of the camp was considered so good that during colonial times it was reserved for the Colonial Governor hence the name Governors` Camp. Today the camp enjoys the same prime location and is perfect for couples, families and friends wanting to experience the best of what a safari in the Masai Mara has to offer.

The tents are on riverbank, tucked into the forest they enjoy uninterrupted views over the Mara River, others have views across the sweeping plains of the Masai Mara. Created in 1972 Governors` Camp set new standards in luxury for a tented camp. Today it`s still Africa’s best.

Your base for the adventure is the Mara Safari Club, which lies in the north west of the Masai Mara, at the foot of the Aitong Hills. The Camp is situated in a prime area of the Masai Mara National Reserve. The Musiara Marsh area renowned for its outstanding game viewing is where both the BBC "Big Cat Diaries" and Disney`s "African Cats" were filmed. You are assured of an excellent game viewing experience. During the annual migration, various crossing points are easily accessible from Sentinel.

The camp itself is set up along the Mara River with wonderful bird life and the private and natural setting ensures that guests have a most enjoyable and authentic experience of the bush. Being on high banks above the Mara River means that there are always hippo and crocodile in the river below to be seen with other animals coming to drink,or cross the river at times.

Mara Leisure Camp is located within one of the most spectacular locations in the entire Masai Mara Game Reserve.

One of the most exciting spectacles in the world is that of the `Great Migration`, where two million wildebeest, zebras and other herbivores pass through the Masai Mara - Serengeti ecosystem in Kenya and Tanzania. This is a perilous migration for the animals, where they encounter many river crossings, and have to run the gauntlet of crocodiles in waiting.

A variety of accommodation is available at Mara Leisure Camp. We offer tents suitable for families, as well as individuals. We even have cottages for those of you who don`t want canvas walls.

 
Fig Tree Camp | mara

Our luxury tented rooms are furnished with all the amenities that you will require for a comfortable stay whilst visiting the Maasai Mara. The rooms can be converted into doubles, singles or triples depending on the bookings. Our family tent is spacious, and it can accommodate a group of between 4 and 6 guests. All our tents have both cold and hot running water for showers. The tents are furnished with a wash basin, toilet, luggage rack, reading table, mosquito nets and comfy safari chairs to experience the amazing views from the verandah.

The camp has two comfy lounges with the main lounge having an adjoined bar. Here you may share the day's stories with your hosts or other guests. During the day the lounges have the best view of the plains of the expansive Maasai Mara and perhaps you may be lucky to capture the actions from some of our resident wildlife.

We have three dining areas to offer you a once in a life time dining experience in the bush. Our main indoor dining area is mostly used when the weather is not suitable for outdoor dining under our shaded area or under the stars dining on our wooded deck.

In an effort to revive the natural habitat Basecamp has planted about 115,000 indigenous trees around the Talek River. Consequently, this has turned into a tree lover’s paradise and a haven for birdlife. Each morning a symphony of birdsong will wake you up as the sun rises over the world-renowned Maasai Mara National Park, home to the greatest gathering of wild animals on the planet. Maasai Mara is only a short walk away across our private suspension bridge.Not far from the camp you will find the thriving village of Talek, whose community has been a close partner of Basecamp since the beginning. In and around Talek you will encounter authentic rural life, with all its mesmerizing vibrancy and cultural components. In the surrounding areas, Basecamp has initiated several community programmes with the aim of empowering local people through capacity building, awareness raising, and vocational training. While staying at Base Camp Mara guests are encouraged to visit the handicraft centre located next to reception, and to plant a tree in our tree plantation.

All tents are built along the banks of the Talek River, the natural border to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The dense riverbed foliage allows for maximum privacy and comfort, without compromising the view of the Masai Mara National Reserve. With more than 286 identified bird species, you are certain to wake to a symphony of birdsong while staying at Basecamp Masai Mara.

All tents are fitted with bio-flush toilets, solar-heated safari showers, and a private balcony, where you have the direct view of the Masai Mara National Reserve.
